How many square feet are in a square yard?

There are 9 square feet in a square yard. A yard is 3 feet, and area multiplies two dimensions: 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 square feet. To convert square feet to square yards, divide by 9; to go from square yards to square feet, multiply by 9.

Source: Unit conversion (1 yd = 3 ft) · Verify against your AHJ and the adopted code edition.

A yard is 3 feet, and area multiplies two dimensions, so:

1 square yard = 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 square feet

Use it whenever a material is priced by the square yard but you measured the room in feet:

  • Square feet → square yards: divide by 9. A 12 × 15 room is 180 ft² → 180 ÷ 9 = 20 sq yd.
  • Square yards → square feet: multiply by 9. 25 sq yd = 225 ft².

Carpet and some concrete finishing are quoted per square yard, so figure the area in square feet, divide by 9, then add a waste allowance (roughly 10% for carpet, more with a pattern or lots of seams).

Work it out: the square footage calculator returns area in square feet, square yards, square metres, and acres at once — no manual dividing.
