Square Footage Calculator
Get the area of a space in square feet, yards, meters, or acres — and estimate material cost.
Leave blank to skip the cost estimate.
- 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft; 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft. Perimeter is for one 12.0′ × 10.0′ rectangle.
How square footage works
Area is simply length × width. This tool reports it in square
feet, square yards (÷ 9), square meters, and
acres (÷ 43,560), and gives the perimeter of one rectangle
for trim, baseboard, or edging.
Use quantity for several identical areas — say five rooms of the same size — and the optional price per square foot for a fast material-cost estimate. The area is gross (no deductions), so subtract large openings if you want a tighter number, and add a waste allowance for the material you're buying.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate square footage?
Multiply length by width in feet: a 12 ft × 10 ft room is 120 square feet. For an L-shaped or complex space, split it into rectangles, find each area, and add them — or run this calculator once per section and total the results.
How do I convert square feet to square yards or acres?
Divide square feet by 9 for square yards (flooring and concrete are often sold by the yard), or by 43,560 for acres. So 120 sq ft is about 13.3 sq yd; an acre is 43,560 sq ft.
How much material or cost will I need?
Enter a price per square foot and the calculator multiplies it by the total area for a quick material cost. Add a waste allowance for cuts and offcuts on top of that, and price by the box or unit where it applies.
